About Our School

Established in 1847, as a new school in Dematagoda with the intention of teaching English to the local students, the school was named after a saint, named “Matthews”. St. Matthew’s College not only disseminate knowledge to the students of the area but also it established itself as a platform for national reconciliation by bringing together all Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims and Burghers.

Message from the Principal

Mr. U.D.S. Wickramarathna

The Principal

About 173 years ago, St.Matthew’s College was established by the government to cater the educational need of the children of not only Dematagoda but also for the whole country.

It aims to bring together all ethnicities of Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims and Burghers together in to one country cantering Colombo city and bringing peace and harmony to all the citizens.

The school has produced intellectuals, artists, administrators, sportsman and politicians to the motherland.

We strive to modernize the past and to create a better exemplary student generation.

By turning a new page at St Matthew’s College, academic and non-academic staff, students, school development society and the past pupils of the school are working together tirelessly to transform the school into a bright and one of the best school’s in Colombo city.

The prestigious events such as the annual walk, Commemorative stamp, felicitation ceremonies, annual concert etc… bring pride to the school. The objective of the of these programmer are to develop the good will of the school and its educational development and to create a disciplined society and citizens.
